Begonia Sky Presents: A Day in the Life with Sex with Candy

For the final installment of the guest blogger series (for now), we have Aileen from Sex with Candy. Aileen is an ex-model who now works at a marketing firm in NYC. Her blog is an outlet for her to post about fashion and things that inspire her.

The Weekender: Holiday Fashion

Due to the fact that I did absolutely nothing exciting this weekend (unless you think watching Anchorman and finishing Allegiant is exciting), The Weekender this week will be all about my holiday style.

The Weekender: PHX to ATL

This past weekend was spent driving. Road trips can be fun, but when there's constantly bad weather, it can get a bit old. So here are some photos from my trip across the country.

The Weekender: 21st Birthday

So, I turned 21 on the 12th. There was drinking and the next day was awful. Ridiculously awful. It was made worse by the fact that I had to finish an exam.

Had my birthday dinner and drink at FEZ.

Holiday Rejuvenation

This time of year can be stressful. From exams to trying to find the perfect gift to dealing with everything that has to do with the holidays.

Priority One Jets shared this article with me a few days ago, it's all about international destinations for rejuvenation.

At a spa in Japan you can chill in a pool of coffee, green tea or wine. If those options aren't your cup of tea (pun intended), you can take a $5,000 Evian bath in Miami, a favorite of tennis champ Serena Williams. Chocolate facials are pretty big at a spa in Portugal and in Italy you can take a hay bath.

While I won't be taking any hay baths this holiday season and sadly, I won't be getting a chocolate facial, I do have some of my own tips for de-stressing.

First I light some candles. My favorite scents right now are from Bath & Body Works. After lighting the candles I start a bath.

The Weekender: Festivities

This weekend was the beginning of the holiday festivities for Thuy Lan and I. Even though we had exams to prepare for (and in my case it was Exam Week 1— curse those online classes).

Holiday Gift Guide: Beauty

It's that time of year again. The holidays are here and our bank accounts hate us. The holidays are an especially busy time for my family as pretty much everyone's birthday is around this time. Thankfully my family has been good about celebrating all of the birthdays, it's more difficult with friends because my birthday is during exam week every single year. My brother's birthday is Christmas day and my mom's is a couple of days after the new year.

Combination gifts are inevitable for my family. So is getting birthday presents in Christmas wrapping paper. Oh the struggles of being born during the holiday season. Thankfully, my mom always makes sure us kids get separate presents AND the birthday presents are in birthday paper. What a lovely lady.

The Weekender: Turkey Day Shenanigans

This has been my third year away from my family for Thanksgiving and my second year spending good ol' turkey day with my roommate, Thuy Lan.

We have this tradition of making far too much food for just two people. It's a tradition we've decided should continue down the road, even when we're 80.

Last year we had an 18 lb turkey, this year we cut back to 14 lbs. But what we lacked in turkey, we made up for with potato dishes.

The shenanigans started the day before Thanksgiving, we went to a tree lighting ceremony at a mall and there was fake snow and too many people. I never thought I would miss snow, but as all of my Facebook friends back home uploaded pretty pictures of snow covered streets, I got a bit nostalgic.

The Style Edit: Thanksgiving

When I moved 2,000 miles away from my family, I didn't think about the consequences— like missing out on Thanksgiving and more importantly— my mom's famous mashed potatoes. I mean, I can cook, but it's nice being able to sleep and then waking up to a lot of food and then going right back to sleep.

This year will be the second of a new Thanksgiving tradition, just chilling with my roommate, Thuy Lan, and cooking and eating way too much food for just two people. More on that after Thanksgiving though.

Because there are just two of us, I don't really bother dressing up. I just throw on an oversized sweater and call it a day. Pants are too restricting for all of the food I eat. But, if you are spending Thanksgiving with your family or a big group of people, keep scrolling for some outfit inspiration!

Begonia Sky Presents: A Day in the Life with K on the Bay

I think it might be a Midwesterner thing, but anytime I meet someone from the Midwest, it's like that scene from Step Brothers— "Did we just become best friends?" "Yup!" It happened with my current roommate, the girl who became my "work mom" and with anyone that came into any of the places I've worked. Maybe it's the shared accent, or finding people that don't think it's weird when I say pop instead of soda. Or maybe I just can't escape the friendly Midwestern attitude, no matter how much I'd love to be like a New Yorker.

When I found out Kristin was a fellow Michigander, I knew I definitely had to feature her. She was already in because of her amazing blog, K on the Bay, but I mean the Michigan thing just sealed the deal.

The Weekender: Thankful

With Thanksgiving coming up, my Facebook newsfeed is littered with posts about what people are thankful for. It's something I've come to expect during the month of November— but not during the other 11 months.

I complain a lot, like all of the other 20-somethings out there (although generally not on Facebook), but I have a lot to be thankful for.

1. My roommate and one of my best friends who feeds me and doesn't judge me.
2. Bellatrix, aka the cutest cat in the world.
3. My incredible best friend who is just as weird as me, but way smarter.
4. My little sister who had to live with my weird antics.
5. My stepdad who took me (and still does) to the grocery store.
6. My big brother who has always been there for me (except when he tormented me as a kid).
7. One of my best friends who I saw for the first time in three years last year.
8. My big sister who picks moose noses with me.
9. My mom and grandma. My mom has always put up with my weirdness and let me steal her shoes and clothes. My grandma was always there to offer advice that I would probably not take.

Begonia Sky Presents: A Day in the Life with Girl in Betsey

Krystin, of Girl in Betsey, was lovely enough to participate in my guest blogger series that I posted about on the Lucky Contributors site and I am so glad she did! Her style is so effortlessly cool— I'm super jealous. She is such a cool girl with a great blog. I know you'll all enjoy it as much as I do!

The Weekender: Adventures

This weekend reminded me of how important it is to make time for fun. I have been really stressed lately— with school, having three jobs, blogging, and attempting to have a social life. It hasn't been easy. If anything, my social life has suffered the most. I haven't really even found time to catch up with old friends via text or a phone call.

When everything starts to pile up, I find that getting away for just a day helps. I know, I know, it's probably better to just get all of my work done and focus, but sometimes mini vacations are just necessary.

Winter Wish List: The White Pepper Edition

I was perusing the interwebs one day, as I generally tend to do when avoiding homework, and stumbled upon The White Pepper. And holy moly was I glad I did.

The White Pepper is based in East London (which was one of my favorite areas I went to when I was last there). Every item on their site is designed in their East London studio.

I fell in love instantly with the collection, Les Parisiennes. Go on, click the link, I'm sure you'll fall in love too.

I put together a little wish list, like my summer wish list. For some reason I love creating these, maybe it's because I get to use Photoshop, or maybe I just like to torture myself with having all of the things I want in one place— just to look at.

1. Coat Dress Leopard
2. Velvet Spangle Collar Dress
3. Sleeveless Spangle Dress in Pink
4. Crop Sleeve Blouse in Leopard
5. Crop Sleeve Blouse Lace
6. Tulle Skirt
7. Polka Dot Crop Shirt
8. Textured Faux Fur Shoulder Bag in Leopard
9. Denim Dungarees Black Wash
I do not own these photos.

Begonia Sky Presents: A Day in the Life with The Vanity

I met Ayat through Lucky Contributors and I'm so glad she responded to my Guest Blogger post! She has such a wonderful sense of style and I was so happy to feature someone from Egypt on my blog (how cool is that?!). The fact that the blogging community has allowed me to meet someone—even if it is virtually— from a country so far away is so incredible. Anyway, Ayat's blog, The Vanity, is lovely and I encourage you all to check it out!

The Style Edit: Arizona Autumn

Life in the desert is not always fun (by not always, I mean almost never). Autumn here is all about layering. It's generally chilly when I leave my house in the morning, but by the time I get to wherever I'm going it's between 80 and 90 degrees. Then there's the air conditioning debacle. And when I leave to come home, it's cold again. It's almost as bad as the weather in Michigan— okay, not quite, but it's still bad.

My Hair Journey

If you've been following along on Instagram, you may know that I, very briefly, had red hair. After three and a half days as a redhead, I had to dye my hair back.

Begonia Sky Presents: A Day in the Life with Playdates + Pearls

When I first saw Samantha's blog, I knew I wanted her to be a part of this series. She has a wonderful blog and manages to balance everything— including taking care of her adorable daughter. I don't know how she does it.

Nailed It!

I was really excited when Jessica of Be Happy and Buy Polish was going to do a nail art guest post for me, especially because I got to use a pun for the title. This nail look is perfect for any Halloween festivities and it seems easy enough that I could even pull it off!

Begonia Sky Presents: A Day in the Life with Short Girl, Tall Appetite

Living with a food blogger is simultaneously the best and worst thing to happen to me. I often come home to a home cooked meal or freshly baked monster cookies. When the deep fryer comes out, that’s when I know I’m in trouble. It means eggrolls are on the way. I’m not saying I’ve eaten eggrolls for every meal multiple days in a row, but I’m not saying I haven’t. Only Thuy Lan knows the answer to that.

Anyway, without further ado, I'm happy to present the first of many in my new blogger series!

Thuy Lan is a junior studying Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. When she’s not studying, making news packages or working at a luxury shoe and handbag store, she’s cooking— and then blogging about it.
This is a day in the life.

Halloween How-To | Cartoon Characters

Last weekend I filmed a Halloween video with Kristen. Most of the items were either thrifted or we already had in our closets. So, I will be bringing you the makeup side of things. I've come up with four really easy makeup looks to go with the costumes.

Begonia Sky is now on Facebook! Go give it a like if you're feeling especially nice!

Halloween How-To | Alien Invasion

It's times like these when I think to myself, "Why do I do this so often?" Especially because I'm still trying to get some green makeup out of my ears. So, I hope you all enjoy this Halloween alien tutorial!

Halloween How-To | Deadly Intentions

I have a tendency to do Halloween makeup throughout the year. Sometimes for fun and sometimes for shoots, but it almost always shocks whomever I happen to be living with at the time.

My parents eventually got used to me walking upstairs looking like a zombie or alien. Now it's my roommate who has to deal with it. She got a bit of a surprise this morning when she walked in to see me looking dead— oops.

It's the first of many looks for my Halloween How-To series. So keep reading if you'd like to find out how I created the look above and stay tuned for more Halloween makeup looks!

Wardrobe Woes

A third of my wardrobe is 1,843 miles away, one third is in a suitcase on my floor. The other third is stuff I barely wear.

My unpacking method after I return from a trip is "leave it in the suitcase for as long as possible" because what if I have to leave again, it'd be so much easier to pack. We all know that's not the case, because I'd just have to take everything out and repack it, but logic apparently has no role in this. So, that leaves most of the contents of my suitcase out of the running.

And now we have my closet. The now very empty closet.

What I Wore Today

It's not quite fall here in Atlanta, nor will it be in Phoenix when I get back. But, I put together a fall-esque outfit anyway.

To DYE For

Is it just me or does Bleach London seem like the coolest place to be? People walk into the salon with plain hair and then walk out with crazy cool hair. Plus, have you seen their Barbie Zine?

Change for Autumn Tag

When I lived in Michigan I always looked forward to autumn. The leaves would change colors, my sweater collection took over my closet, and pumpkin spice lattes were back. But now that I live in Phoenix, autumn is just a slightly less hot version of summer. My sweaters will probably stay in boxes until December sadly enough.

Even though I'll have to keep wearing shorts for the next few months, it doesn't mean my makeup can't be changed up for autumn.

The "Change for Autumn" tag was created by Anna (The Anna Diaries), so go check out her post!

Life updates

For me, August was quite the month. Excitement was followed up by disappointment. I had to pack up my life into two suitcases and then unpack them days later. But through it all, I've somehow managed to keep my spirits up. I'm trying this new thing called positivity. I'll let ya know how it all turns out.

The end of August for some symbolizes the start of autumn, but for those in Arizona it just means we have a few months of heat to look forward to still. Thankfully it'll be down to just over 100 degrees if we're lucky. While others will soon be breaking out sweaters and jeans, I'll still be stuck in tank tops and shorts. This doesn't please me. Thankfully, I only have two more years to endure in Phoenix.

Other than that, my life has been taken over by on demand TV, online classes and all sorts of applications. That's pretty much it.

Street Style: Wedding

I've apparently gotten to the phase in my life where friends are constantly getting engaged. Weddings can be so much fun, but now that I'm an adult and plagued with finding the perfect wedding gifts and a date, it doesn't seem as great.

With the bride
One of my favorite things about going to weddings is having an excuse to buy a new outfit. The wedding I recently went to was outside— in the middle of August, in Arizona. That just added to the struggle.

It was a fun night filled with talking to friends I hadn't seen in ages.

Wish List

This post is inspired by an app I recently downloaded called Fresh. It's from Wantworthy (which you should check out ASAP if you haven't already). Basically, you pick what kind of girl you are and they recommend stores, which you can browse for hours on end. You mark the things you want and can even buy items from within the app. If that's not your style (or you're a broke college kid, like myself), you can send your list to friends and family so they know what kinds of gifts you really want.

Street Style: ATL

I recently got back from my trip to Michigan, Chicago & Atlanta. It was a much needed break. I somehow managed to pack my suitcase well enough so that it was under 50 lbs even after all of the shopping I did.

Now back to the reason of this post, I created this blog as a beauty and style blog, but until now it has pretty much just been beauty products. That changes today. I'll be posting more fashion related posts now and I'm starting with an OOTD from Atlanta.

May Favorites

May definitely made up for my lack of favorites in April. Even with saving money for my vacation, I was able to make quite a few beauty purchases.

DIY: Lip & Body Scrub

If you're a fan of Lush's lip scrubs, this post is definitely for you. I love that their lip scrubs are edible, but the products can be a little out pricey for the amount you get. Don't get me wrong, the products are great and generally last a long time, but why pay more when you can make something similar at home for a fraction of the price?

All you'll need for this is a sealable container, sugar, olive oil and a spoon. I chose to use a meyer lemon olive oil to add a little flavor. Any flavor or unflavored olive oil will do (I'd stay away from garlic though—unless you're into that kind of thing).

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Hello! I just wanted to make a quick update on here, mostly to explain the lack of an April Favorites post— and other posts for that matter.

As any college student knows, April is a pretty crazy month. There are finals and professors like to make everything due on the same day. It's like they plan these things to stress us out as much as possible. With that and starting my new job, I've barely had time to think about what I loved in April.

BUT, because of my new job I've had a bit more spending money as of late which means I've been buying more beauty products and clothes. And that means more posts (hopefully).

March Favorites

March seemed to be a bit of a blur. I was always in class or at work and if those things weren't going on, I'd most likely be asleep or catching up on my shows. What an exciting life for a college kid. So this month was mostly about simplicity in the beauty department. I needed things that would be quick, since I started to need to sleep in past 8.

February Favorites!

There aren't many favorites this month, and I'm blaming the number of days in February.

First we have MAC lipsticks, a definite favorite of mine. I'll probably always mention one or two. My February shades are Shy Girl and Party Parrot. I mentioned them in my MAC Haul post. Because it feels like spring here, I thought it was time to brighten up my makeup looks.

The Time I Ran Away to California // Part 2

This is being posted much later than I anticipated. I have loads of excuses, but it's really just the fact that I got so excited about applying for internships and looking for more that this photo post slipped my mind.

We went to Rodeo Drive to lust over clothes and things we can't afford, and then happened upon something we could afford... Sprinkles Cupcakes. How cool is this cupcake ATM? That should be a thing everywhere (but not really, it'd be very dangerous).

That Time I Ran Away to California // Part 1

I recently ran away to California. It was my first time ever going there, so I was really excited. My friend and I left early Friday afternoon. We didn't anticipate the drive feeling like 10 hours instead of five, but hey, that's life I guess. So here's some of the photos from our first day!

The first LA sign.

MAC Haul

I work very close to a MAC store, and by very close, I mean I take maybe 20 steps and I'm there. I walk past it each day, unless I go through Macy's, and then I have to walk through the beauty department to get to work. It's a lose-lose situation, really.

I'm a college kid, so I can't really afford to be spending all kinds of money on beauty products every week. I saved up everything from the past two months for this haul. However, this does mean I have to be a bit more creative with my blog posts in the next few weeks, as I'll be on a fairly strict budget.

I bought the MAC Pro Palette with Woodwinked, Amber Lights, Naked Lunch and Ricepaper. I adore MAC eyeshadows (I also bought Blackberry recently which is not pictured). The eyeshadows are very pigmented and stay all day.
From Bottom to Top:
Woodwinked- (Veluxe Pearl) Warm brownish gold
Amber Lights- (Frost) Warm peachy brown with shimmer
Naked Lunch- (Frost) Slightly pink with shimmer
Rice Paper- (Frost) Light gold with shimmer

Phyto Review

As someone with extremely frizzy hair, when my mom sent these products to me to try out, I was really excited. I hoped this would be some miracle hair product that left me frizz free.

January Favorites!

Hey guys,

Even though it's mid February, I wanted to get a January favorites post up. These are products I've really been loving lately.

Friday, February 15, 2013

That's a rubbish title to be honest. I should probably have a better intro to my new blog, but hey, what can ya do?

I suppose I'll introduce myself first, my name is Kyra (kuh-eye-ruh). I'm a 20-year-old journalism student with a love for all things beauty, fashion, music and travel. I tend to be quite awful at about me type things, so forgive me. There is plenty of time and many blog posts ahead for you all to learn more about me though.

I read some fashion and beauty blogs and watch beauty gurus on YouTube. I'm also an avid reader of Nylon. And one day I started toying with the idea of making a blog or videos on YouTube. I obviously am going with the blog. I mean, I've written bloggy things before (I use made up words sometimes, you'll get used to it), mostly just about my summer in Italy, but still. So instead of using my day off to file my taxes, I decided to start this. I'll be doing reviews and such, along with a few random things here and there that pertain to my other interests. What fun, right?

Here's hoping it lasts!

x Kyra

PS here's what I look like if you're super curious
